California is in a drought and it’s no surprise to residents as well as anyone in the country. There are articles written about it everyday, the Governor of California is always discussing the current state of the drought and restrictions are constantly in place. The most common ones seen are watering your lawn only on certain days, not being able to hose off your driveways, washing your vehicles on certain days as well as others. During the summer months, swimming pools can lose on average an inch of water every day because of evaporation but the most interesting phenomenon is nobody ever talks about them! Yes, that’s right…. depending on the size of the swimming pool you can save on average 20,000 gallons of water or more each day by not draining a swimming pool. The water in the swimming pool should be changed every 2-3 years because of high calcium hardness and total dissolved solid levels (TDS). This happens because our fill water in California is loaded with limestone and other hardness minerals which cause staining to the water tile line, the surface of the swimming pool and equipment. As water evaporates, the hardness minerals remain in solution and gradually increase each year. Depending on who you talk to, the recommended calcium hardness for a swimming pool is between 200 and 400 parts per million (ppm) and if your TDS is above 3,000 ppm they will insist on a water change. Most individuals aren’t aware of this but it should be done to increase the life span of the swimming pool and make it easier to manage. If a water change is recommended, a typical drain and refill can take up to 2 – 3 days. During this time you will expose the liner of the swimming pool which is always dangerous. California has hard water, therefore you can start with calcium hardness levels that are higher than the recommended amount.
